Reacting to a volume spike is a procedure problem rather than an analysis problem. The short answer

Do the cheap structural checks in the first two minutes, capture the perishable evidence immediately, and refuse to classify the behavioural fields until the window has run long enough for them to mean anything. Write the class, the band and the falsifier down before writing any explanation.

Almost everything that goes wrong in a live reading goes wrong because that order was reversed. The pressure to have an answer is highest in the first minute, which is precisely when the least evidence exists, and an answer produced under those conditions is produced by whichever narrative arrived first.

What being baited actually means

Being baited is not about anybody trying to trick you personally. It is a structural property of how attention and information arrive in opposite orders. The turnover figure is available instantly. Everything that would let you interpret it becomes available slowly, and some of it only after the window has closed.

That gap has a shape. In the first minute you have a multiple and a chart. In the first two minutes you can have the structural facts, which are decisive when present. Address novelty and tail growth need long enough for a pattern to exist. Spacing and dispersion need enough observations to be a distribution rather than an anecdote. Lead-lag needs the earlier move, which you may or may not have captured.

The consequence is that the confidence a reader feels and the evidence a reader has move in opposite directions during the first ten minutes. Feeling peaks early, driven by the multiple. Evidence accumulates late. A procedure written in advance is the only thing that reliably survives that mismatch, because it was written when nothing was at stake.

What would change my mind

If readings produced by following this order turned out to be correct no more often than readings produced ad hoc, on windows whose cause is independently known, the procedure would be ritual. That comparison has not been run here, which is why the confidence band on this note is Provisional rather than Working.

Two things about this timeline are deliberate. The capture step comes before any thinking, because evidence that has decayed cannot be recovered by reasoning harder. And the classification step has a fixed end time, because a reading left open indefinitely drifts towards whatever explanation the analyst finds most attractive.

The first two minutes in detail

The opening two minutes carry more value than the remaining eighteen, which is counterintuitive given how little evidence exists at that point. The reason is that the structural checks are both fast and decisive, and the perishable evidence is only available then.

  • Capture before you reason. The transaction set, the slots and the current pool state. Reasoning can be redone; a lost window cannot.
  • Fix the comparison period explicitly, and make it start before the first move rather than at the interesting part.
  • Check pool age. A pool that did not exist an hour ago explains a great deal on its own.
  • Check reserves. A recorded liquidity change is a fact, and facts end arguments that distributions only prolong.
  • Note the venue count. One pool carrying nearly everything while a deeper pool stays quiet is a specific and readable situation.
  • Write down, in one line, what you currently believe. It will be wrong often enough to be instructive later, and it cannot be reconstructed honestly after the fact.

That last item is the one people skip and the one that improves readings fastest. An initial impression recorded at T+2 and compared against the classification at T+20 is the cheapest calibration exercise available, and it costs a single sentence.

The refusal list

A procedure is defined as much by what it forbids as by what it prescribes. These refusals are absolute, and they apply at every point in the timeline rather than case by case.

  • No naming. No token, wallet, team, launchpad or venue is described as manipulating anything, in a note, a message or a conversation. Intent is not in the record and a wrong accusation cannot be undone by a later correction.
  • No price expectation. No target, no entry, no exit, and no phrasing that would function as one if a reader acted on it.
  • No frequency claim. Usually, typically and most of the time are numeric claims, and they are removed unless a real measurement supports them.
  • No single-field verdict. Every behavioural field carries an ordinary explanation, so a reading resting on one is Provisional at best regardless of how striking it looked.
  • No retrofitting the window. If the reading is unsatisfying, the correct response is undecidable, not a different window that produces a better story.
  • No evasion guidance. How a footprint could be reshaped to defeat one of these checks is not discussed here in any framing.

The first refusal is the one under most pressure during a live window, because a named example is what makes a reading circulate. The whole point of an anonymised or hypothetical framing is that the pattern remains just as instructive while the cost of being wrong drops to nothing.

Writing the note while it is uncomfortable

The falsifier is written at T+20, before the explanatory prose, and it is written while the reading is still uncomfortable. That timing is the whole trick. The band is set by rule rather than by feel. Firm requires a recorded structural fact. Working requires several fields agreeing whose ordinary explanations are mutually incompatible. Provisional is one field pointing somewhere. Undecidable is the honest majority outcome for short windows and is a finished result rather than a failure.

Reviewing your own readings later

A procedure only improves if the outputs get looked at again, and the review is more useful when it is structured than when it is a general feeling about how things went.

  1. Compare the T+2 impression against the T+20 classHow often did the initial reaction survive? A high survival rate is not necessarily good news; it may mean the later steps are being read through the lens of the first impression.
  2. Check whether the falsifier was ever testedA falsifier nobody went back to check is decoration. Testing it is the only step that turns the practice into evidence about the method rather than about the window.
  3. Count the undecidable resultsIf almost none appear, the bands are not being applied honestly. If almost all do, the windows are too short or the venue coverage is incomplete.
  4. Look for a recurring classAn analyst whose readings land on the same class disproportionately often is either watching a very unusual set of pairs or is pattern-matching to a favourite explanation.
  5. Reread the refusalsSpecifically, check whether any note drifted into naming, into a price expectation, or into a frequency word that no measurement supports. Drift here is gradual and invisible from inside a single note.

None of that produces a score, and it is not meant to. It produces a list of habits to correct, which is what a review is for.

The one mechanism somebody chose

Of the six surge classes, five happen to a pair and one is arranged. That asymmetry is worth keeping in mind during a live window, because it is the only class where a person filled in a form and the form constrains what you are about to observe.

It cannot compensate for missing coverage. A well-ordered reading of one pool on a pair that trades across three is a well-organised reading of the wrong data, and the procedure will produce it confidently. Coverage is checked at T+2 for exactly this reason.

And it cannot reach intent. Every step measures what accounts did. None of them touches why anybody did it, who instructed it, or whether the people involved considered it legitimate. A window classified as produced has been described, not accused, and that distinction is maintained deliberately on every page of this site. The procedure is written to make the description as good as the record allows and to stop there, which is a narrower ambition than most spike commentary has and a considerably more defensible one.

Is twenty minutes not far too slow for a live market?

It is slow if the objective is to trade the first minute, and this desk does not have that objective and publishes no trading guidance. It is fast if the objective is to say something defensible about what happened. Most of the value arrives in the first two minutes anyway, because the structural checks are quick; the remaining eighteen are spent letting the behavioural fields become meaningful.

What should be captured immediately and what can wait?

Capture the perishable evidence first: the transaction set with slots, the pool state at the moment you started, and the earlier move you intend to use as a comparison. Reserve history and balance changes can wait indefinitely because they are permanent. Analysts who reason first and capture second routinely find the evidence they need has blended into later activity.

Does this procedure work if I only have a chart?

Not really, and that is worth being blunt about. A chart shows turnover and price, which are the two quantities that separate the surge classes least well. Every step here relies on properties of the underlying transaction set. A chart can tell you a window is worth looking at; it cannot tell you what the window is.

How do I avoid classifying the echo as the event?

Fix the comparison period so that it starts before the first move rather than at the part that caught your attention. That single choice prevents most echo misreadings. If you cannot establish when the first move began, record that you could not, and treat the echo class as unresolved rather than eliminated.

What if the window resolves to undecidable every time?

That is a normal result for short windows and not a sign the procedure is failing. If it happens on longer windows too, the likely causes are incomplete venue coverage or a comparison period that starts too late. Both are fixable. Rounding undecidable up to the nearest interesting class is not a fix; it is the failure the procedure exists to prevent.

Should the note be published even when the reading was wrong?

A wrong reading published with its correction is more useful than a wrong reading removed, because the correction is the part a reader learns from. Notes here are edited rather than deleted, and the modified date moves when they change. A record that only contains readings that worked out is a record that has stopped being evidence about the method.

Does any of this constitute trading advice?

No. Nothing in this procedure produces a price expectation, a target, an entry or an exit, and the refusal list rules those out explicitly. The output of the whole exercise is a class, a band and a falsifier. What anybody does with that is outside the scope of this desk and outside the scope of every page on this site.
